Porto!

There is so much to see here in Porto!

Day 1:

Late morning we set out to explore the old city, our apartment is very central. From here we can walk and see most parts of Porto.

These pictures are taken just out side the apartment door looking left and right respectively. The cobble stone street is curved and mossy, very uneven to walk on.

We started our day with some Pasteis de nata, these were delicious little custard tarts, and an americano for me and Meia de leite (coffee with milk) for Dale.

After breakfast we headed to the grocery store to stock up on food for the week. I took a few pictures of the streets along the way. The buildings are all very narrow, most have ceramic tile details and little Juliette balconies. Some of the buildings in this part of the city date back to the 12th century. Just stunning!

Who said ketchup chips were only available in Canada!?! The grocery store was small but well stocked, we found everything we needed. The produce and fish selection was vast. But regular coffee was hard to find, they do like their espresso!

Porto Cathedral, Se do Porto, built in the 12th century. We may explore the inside later in the week when the weather is supposed to get rainy.

We ended the day with an order of "Cachorrinhos", special hotdogs as a starter at the Cervejaria Gazela. This is where the late Anthoney Bordaine ate in his 2017 show "Parts Unknown". We also ordered the famous "Francesinha sandwich" meaning little french woman, made with layers of toasted bread and assorted meats such as steak, ham, linguica and chipolta over which sliced cheese is melted and then boiling tomato beer sauce is poured, delicious! Dale had a "Pico pau a americo" kind of reminded me of a Portuguese poutine. Fries mixed with assorted meats, steak, ham, sausage topped with pickled carrots and cauliflower and green olives, cheese and then covered in sauce, we washed it all down with Super Bock, Porto's most popular beer.
A short walk home and a blissfully quiet nights sleep.
